My Big Campus
My Big Campus Project
The Big Idea: Students will complete the my big campus project to learn about how geometry relates to real life by finding an object around their campus and finding the volume and surface area. Students will be completing the project individually with an object of their choice and then participate in an online discussion using My Big Campus with in a group of 4 to discuss what they have learned, the challenges they faced and how they overcame them, as well as how they see volume and surface area relating to the world around them this project will show students that the skills that they are learning in class will directly relate to the world as well as give them an opportunity to collaborate virtually online with their classmates.
Project Outline
1. Exploration – Students will be sent out onto their campus to find an object that they can find the surface area and volume of. They should keep in mind that they will only have a ruler available to calculate the volume and they should find an object that will be easier to measure. Students will then bring their object back to class.
2. Identification – Students will begin the identification process by first classifying their object as a prism, cylinder, cone, pyramid or sphere. Students will then identify the appropriate method they will use to find the volume and surface area and write a brief summary of the work that they will have to do to calculate them.
3. Calculation – Students will calculate the volume and surface area of their object and show all work on their paper.
End of in class work for project.
4. Share and Collaboration – After students have finished the calculations for volume and surface area of their object they will participate in an online discussion using My Big Campus. The class page and student accounts were previously set up during class. Students will share on the class page a picture of their object that they will upload as well as participate in a group discussion about the following 3 questions:
1. What were some difficulties that you experienced during this activity and how did you overcome them?
2. How do you see volume and surface area as they relate to the real world?
3. What was one of the biggest things you learned during this activity?
Students will post in their groups their responses to these questions and then respond to each of their group members’ posts in the form of a discussion.
