My Philosophy on Classroom Management
Cooperative learning style
My personal philosophy of discipline is to use cooperative learning classroom discipline to prevent negative behavior before it begins. In the classroom the power in the classroom is shared between the students and the teacher educators and focuses on the three C’s: capable, connection, contribution. I also try to prevent negative behavior by supporting students when they exhibit positive behavior. I try to connect on a personal level in a positive and appropriate way with each of my students to help them feel more comfortable when they are in my classroom. . I strive to work together with my students to create a safe, orderly and inviting community. When students come into the classroom for the first time it is important to establish classroom norms and guidelines for the students to follow such as respecting one another and their opinions and being engaged and participating in class. I think it is important for the students to come up with things that they think should be norms in their class and then posting them up on the wall to reference when needed. I also provide my students with a step by step plan for dealing with discipline such as:
First offense – In class warning
Second offense - Teacher discussion with student
Third offense – Call home
Fourth offense – Parent teacher conference
Fifth offense and beyond – Administration interference
By setting up clear and easy to follow classroom norms, the standards are set right away and the students know what is expected of them. This makes discipline in the classroom easier because it doesn’t come as a surprise after a student breaks one of the classroom norms. As a teacher I will ask that the students show respect for me as their teacher, and if any disrespect comes up I will address it immediately. However, I feel most comfortable when I am able to deal with discipline in a one on one setting to get to the root of the problem. I also try to avoid confrontation with a student by being firm yet friendly and describing the negative behavior as opposed to the student. I always make sure to keep my emotions in check to have a calm discussion. My ultimate goal with classroom discipline is to do all that I can to help each student feel safe in my classroom.
