Everything We Wanted to Know About Job Hunting
This guest speaker was from the career center at school. She was such a helpful speaker, my favorite by far! She asked us what we wanted to talk about and then made sure she hit all the topics that we wanted covered. The first subject she covered was how to write your resume for a teaching position. She told us that the most important thing to have on your resume is your credential. Next, you are supposed to list your education in reverse chronological order starting with your highest degree. Some other things we could include in our resumes are our experience student teaching, activities you were a part of that are related to teaching, and any extracurricular activities. The next topic we talked about was a cover letter, or letter of intent. This is a letter that you place on top of your resume to explain your intentions for applying for this position. It looks good if you research the school you are applying to and find out what they think in important or what buzz words they use frequently.
After you submit your resume and cover letter, you will hopefully be invited to have an interview. We went over proper etiquette for interviewing. She told us that it is ok to ask questions about out interview. We should ask who we will be interviewing with, if it will be a panel, and if I should prepare or bring anything to the interview. The speaker also told us that we will be asked to talk about how we wil behave in the classroom in certain situations. The interviewers will ask us to tell of a time when….. When we answer these questions we should use the STAR method. Star stands for situation, task, action, and result. It is important to talk about the result of the situation. People typically forget to tell about how the situation resolved itself. It is especially important to remember to talk about the result as well as the process that we went through.
Overall I really enjoyed this speaker. I think she had a lot of information that we wanted and needed to hear. We have all been really nervous this semester with finding jobs to apply for and this speaker did a good job of helping all of us to calm down. I feel informed when I go into the job search as opposed to being in the dark.
