Del Lago Academy is truly an amazing school. The campus is simply beautiful and the atmosphere on campus was empowering. They have all the resources necessary to fill their students with confidence and help them succeed. The staff at Del Lago, as the principal explained, referees to their students as scholars. They use this word to describe their students because the term "student" has developed a slightly negative feeling. It is all part of empowering their students. Wile visiting the campus we were privileged enough to hear from both a panel of teachers and a separate panel of students. The teacher panel informed us about how the subjects are taught at this school. They also shared their favorite things about teaching at Del Lago. Many of the teachers expressed that they enjoyed working at Del Lago because of the atmosphere created by giving the power to the students and the high levels of collaboration between the subjects. The student panel was especially interesting. Almost every question asked of the students involved either technology used by the students, or the homework policy. There were many questions asked about if they enjoyed using iPads in the classroom and what happens if they are broken. When answering the students did not seem as excited about using such "fun" technology in their classes. It seemed so normal to them that all of the interest had left and the iPads were seen the same way as a text book. When asked about the no homework policy, I could tell that the student's chosen for the panel all had a good work ethic in place. They expressed that they enjoyed the no homework policy because it gave them the freedom to do the homework when they felt they needed to and to not do it when they found the subject or topic easy. This raised a question in my mind about the students at the school in general. Do they all share this mindset? Or do some of them not have a proper work ethic in place and are hurt academically on their performance tasks because they are not being required to practice their skills by doin homework. I think that in mathematics especially it is important to give homework, and am not sure if i agree 100% with their policy.
